The Story

Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen-AI) is becoming more common in creative fields, and its impact can already be seen in our academy. Over the past few months, I have observed how students and alumni are experimenting with AI tools like generative fill. Some are excited about how these tools can expand their creative process, while others are more hesitant due to ethical concerns and copyright issues. Tutors are also divided—some see Gen-AI as a valuable addition to their work, while others are unsure about its relevance or are concerned about its effect on originality.

In the professional world, Gen-AI is being used in many areas, such as branding, fashion, and product design. However, it is difficult to track how quickly these technologies are spreading and to predict how they will shape future creative practices. It often feels like trying to follow a moving target.

This research is shaped by key motivations. Gen-AI offers exciting new possibilities for artists and designers to experiment and innovate, but it also raises important questions. How is it influencing how people experience and perceive visual culture? Are AI-generated images reinforcing biases due to the datasets they use? What impact does the high energy consumption of AI tools have on sustainability? And how do we address complex issues around ownership, authorship, and copyright in AI-generated art?

Through this research, I aim to explore different perspectives and provide insights that will help our academy take an informed and ethical stance on Gen-AI. By identifying opportunities and challenges, I hope to ensure that our students and staff can engage confidently with this technology and contribute to the future of art and design.
